Sports Psychiatry
Application of the science and practice of psychiatry to the world of sports, using the biopsychosocial model to:
- work with athletes and teams
- provide individual and group consultations
- assess and treat psychiatric disorders in athletes
- facilitate maximum team cohesion
- facilitate psychiatric recovery from injury
- consult with fellow physicians in the disciplines of sport medicine, pediatrics, and orthopedics regarding athlete patients
- address overtraining issues
- promote healthy life balance within the context of athletic pursuits
- prevent and treat the female athlete triad and similar imbalances of activity and nutritional intake
