Integrative and Holisitic Medicine
Complementary medicine (when therapies are used together with conventional medicine, such as the use of yoga in combination with habit reversal therapy to diminish the tics associated with Tourettes disorder) and alternative medicine (when treatments are used in place of “conventional medicine”)are increasingly popular for children with and Dr. Jenna believes there is a role for the integration of safe and effective therapies into treatment of the whole child. She has advocated for the formation of a complementary and integrative medicine committee within AACAP.
In order to provide proper psychoeducation to children and families, we need to be aware of the science of these therapies. Dr. Jenna does her best to provide evidence-based information about interventions including nutritional, immunomodulational, biochemical, detoxification, sensory integration therapy, music and other expressive therapies, as well as homeopathy, acupuncture, chiropractic, craniosacral therapy, reiki, and yoga with her patients and families. Dr Jenna’s approach is consistent with the principles of integrative and holistic medicine.
Integrative Medicine is, according to the Consortium of Academic Health Centers for Integrative Medicine Steering Committee, “the practice of medicine that reaffirms the importance of the relationship between the practitioner and the patient, focuses on the whole person, is informed by evidence, and makes use of all appropriate therapeutic approaches, healthcare professionals and disciplines to achieve optimal health and healing.”
Holistic Medicine is “medical care that views physical and mental and spiritual aspects of life as closely interconnected and equally important approaches to treatment.”
Integrative Holistic Medicine is the art and science of healing that addresses care of the whole person: body, mind, and spirit, according to the American Board of Holisitic Integrative Medicine. DrJenna has applied to the American Board of Holisitic Integrative Medicine, and expects to take her certification examination in November 2011.
Dr. Jenna believes that caring for our planet is integral to human health, and appreciates the interdependence of all living organisms. She works hard to combine science and compassion in her treatment of children and families. She believes in considering the whole child, in providing family-centered care, with a focus on strengths and optimism. She believes that the relationships formed with patients and families are key, and seeks to provide individualized therapies. She has a multidisciplinary, collaborative approach.
